Welcome to Little Tootsies

Each room is made up of a team of practitioners lead by a head of room. For the continuity of care for our children and to ensure good parent partnerships and relationships our staff teams are permanently based in their own rooms. We have a nursery team of separate support staff available to cover holidays, training and sickness so that agencies are never used.

Little Tootsies Room caters for children age from 3 months to 20 months, the ratio of carers to children is 1:3. The room is divided in two, lower and upper end. The lower end of the room offers a safe area for small babies who are not yet moving and those that are beginning to crawl and cruise, children in the upper end are confident cruisers and walkers.

You and your child will be assigned a key person; this is likely to be decided prior to your first day to ensure that the very young children have someone who knows their routine well, their key person will change on moving from the lower to the upper end of the room. They will remain in Little Tootsies until they move up to Stompers room, Any moves will be discussed with you and take into account your child’s developmental stage. Your key person will plan to support your child with their next stages of development through observations and then using this information to plan activities to enhance their learning and development.

In Lower End the only set routine is meal times and nappy times, however these are changed to meet individual needs where required. All other activities in this end of the room are carried out around the child’s individual routine and needs. The upper end enjoys planned activities and child choice at set times thorough out the day, by this stage most children are in similar routines. Activities offered to the children encourage development in all areas; your key person will plan to support your child with their next stage of development through observations and then using this information to plan activities to enhance their learning and development. Children also have a wide choice of toys and equipment to use throughout the day, this can range from play tunnels, mirrors and sensory to messy play.

Regularly throughout the week lower end join with the upper to enjoy sing and sign sessions and the outside play garden, this supports the transition for children from lower to upper end causing little disruption to the child and their routine. In Little Tootsies we enjoy extracurricular activities alongside the daily fun, our Music and Movement Practitioner holds weekly sessions for Music and Dance as well as Sensory and Sign sessions.

For the younger children who sleep throughout the day we have a cot room, this is fully air-conditioned to ensure a comfortable sleeping temperature for the children, others who sleep after lunch have rest mats which are laid out on the carpeted area. Most children by the time they move to the upper end have settled into a similar routine to that of the nursery and have one longer sleep after lunch Children who use the cots are placed to bed in the same cot each time to ensure continuity, we encourage you to send in any comforters they may need to sleep so that they feel calm and relaxed. Each child is provided with clean bedding which is kept in their own individual sleep bag to prevent any cross contamination. All children are checked when sleeping every 10 minutes and a sleep monitor is always on in the sleep room.

It is well known that in the early years of the child’s development eating habits and tastes are formed for life. At Tootsies your child will be introduced to a wide range of fresh stimulating flavours which will help to establish healthy eating pattern.

Meal and snack times are organised so that they are social occasions in which children and staff participate in small groups. During meals and snack times children are encouraged to use manners and say 'please' and 'thank you'. Children sit in small groups with adult supervision at appropriate tables and chairs for their age and size children under one are able to use a moulded support seat, with tray for feeding.

A weaning menu is provided, however all weaning is carried out in line with parent wishes. The full menu has a vegetarian option available; all dietary requirements can be provided for.
